Flute Day at the Sábalo School

Sábalo Lodge would like to give a special thanks to our recent guests Chris and Holly Cottrell of Atlanta for their generous contribution to the local school of Sábalo village.

Chris is a high school Environmental Science Teacher and Holly is a Music Teacher. When one of Holly’s colleagues found out she intended to visit the local school of Sábalo she gave Holly twenty recorders (plastic flutes) for the children.

We made arrangements with the teacher to visit the classroom where Chris and Holly distributed the flutes to the ten children that attend school in Sábalo. Holly also brought pictures of her students and classroom in Atlanta and shared them with the children. Holly, with the help of a friend of Sábalo Lodge to translate, conducted a quick class on how to play the flute.

The children were enthusiastically playing their flutes and the classroom came alive with the sounds of musical notes and high pitched squeaks as the children struggled to get their finger positions right.

Holly’s enthusiasm for teaching showed in the classroom with her animated and interactive teaching style.

The children and the teacher were very grateful, as were we ;-)

Three weeks later I was riding my bike through the town of Sabalo and noticed a little girl trotting towards her brother in their yard. She had a flute that she was happily playing and then I noticed her brother had his flute as well. Hearing them struggle to make the flute sing while dancing around the yard brought me an immediate smile.

Thanks so much Chris & Holly!
