Water Use Management

What is the issue?

In many parts of the world demand for water exceeds supply. In other areas where supply is not an issue we are seeing problems meeting the needs of growing populations such as in the United States where California, Nevada and Arizona are currently asking residents to ration water.

Guests’ demand for water usually far exceeds that of local residents. Excessive water use can degrade or destroy local water resources, threatening the availability of water for local needs. Problems may be made worse in areas where high tourist season corresponds with periods of low rainfall.

What Can You Do As A Guest At Sabalo Lodge?

Brushing your teeth or shaving with the faucet running wastes almost 9 litres of water a minute. Rinse out from a glass instead or turn off the water during teeth brushing or shaving.

When possible linens and towels should be washed every 3rd day. Try hanging these items on a line during the day where they can be refreshed from the air and sun.

When showering, try turning off the shower while lathering up instead of just letting the shower run. Use our spring fed stream to take a quick dip and rinse off instead of taking multiple showers in a day.

Report any leaking faucets or toilets to a staff member.

Try to remember to always turn off the water when not in use.

What Has Sabalo Lodge Done To Conserve Water Usage?

Low water usage toilets have been installed throughout the lodge.

Our gravity fed water system limits water pressure and excessive usage.

Our gardens and landscaping are all indigenous species; we do not water our grounds.

We use a water efficient washing machine that saves on water and electrical usage.

A gray water system makes efficient use of waste water for composting and watering of plants.

Regular monitoring of our water usage is recorded and evaluated for better water saving ideas.

Regular inspections are done for leaks. Any leaks found are repaired and recorded in a log book.

We only allow up to twelve guests at a time ensuring water consumption for this area is not abused.
