Energy Management

What is the issue?

Hotels and lodges can use significant amounts of energy for operations and activities. In many facilities, energy costs are the second highest operational costs after payroll. This high demand for energy can usually be attributed to the use of energy-intensive items that provide modern comforts and conveniences such as air conditioning to a large numbers of guests. The vast majority of hotels and resorts meet their energy needs by purchasing energy produced by the burning of fossil fuels (oil, coal, natural gas) which contribute to air pollution and global climate change. Improvements in the design of structures and utilizing renewable energy can help decrease dependency on energy produced by fossil fuels.

What can you do as a guest at Sabalo Lodge?

Switch off lights when not in use.
Ask a staff member about recharging your electronics before plugging in.
Try to travel with Energy Star compliant electronics.
Have your sheets and towels laundered every 3rd day to save on electricity.
Low wattage rechargeable LED flashlights are the most eco friendly for our area.
If reading a book at night use a simple reading light instead of the light in the room.

What has Sabalo Lodge done to conserve energy usage?

Sabalo Lodge runs off 100% renewable energy. We have a robust solar system for all our needs.
We have installed low wattage florescent bulbs throughout our facilities.
All appliances are low wattage or Energy Star compliant.
We use a timer on our refrigerator so it does not run late in the evening.
The designs of our structures have open ventilation eliminating the need for air conditioning.
The open design also allows for maximum natural light throughout the day.
Our solar system has a computer that allows us to monitor usage on a daily basis.
All the wiring and appliances are new but we still do regular safety checks for repairs.
All light switches are illuminated with an LED light so they can be found in the dark.
There are no electrical outlets in guest’s rooms so that we can control energy consumption.
All laundry is dried on clothes lines; no electric or gas dryers are used.
